PHILADELPHIA — The Board of Pensions of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) has selected Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM), leading health insurer and health care services company, to provide group health care coverage for its approximately 8,500 retired members across the country starting January 1, 2024.
In addition to the same coverage and benefits the retirees are used to receiving, the Humana Group Medicare Advantage plan also will include wellness, clinical and fitness programs. For added convenience, the plan will combine medical and prescription drug coverage into one plan with one ID card.
“The transition to a Medicare Advantage plan reflects the values of the Benefits Plan of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.),” says Pat Haines, Executive Vice President and Chief Benefits Officer at the Board of Pensions. “As reflected in A Theology of Benefits, we are stewards of resources designed to promote wholeness and provide the best possible benefits to members within our financial means. After an extensive and detailed search, we have engaged Humana to assist with carrying out that commitment – a move that we believe will provide our retirees the quality, affordable care they deserve.”
Humana has one of the largest Medicare Advantage PPO networks in the country, encompassing nearly 940,000 providers and more than 3,500 hospitals across the country. Members may also seek care from out-of-network providers and receive the same level of benefits, as long as those providers accept Medicare and agree to bill Humana.
“We have a proven track record of excellent customer care at Humana,” said Tim Snyder, Humana Senior Vice President, Group Medicare. “We will provide superior account service with an experienced account management and implementation team that will provide the Board’s members with industry leading member service experience.”
The initial contract will provide coverage from January 2024 through December 2027. The monthly premium for 2024 coverage will be $0. Benefit highlights include the following:
Humana has served Medicare beneficiaries for nearly 40 years, with about 8.6 million Medicare members in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico, as of March 2023. Approximately 5.7 million of those members are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, including retirees of other faith-based group clients.
