From our President: A steadfast mission amid lingering uncertainty

February 01, 2022

We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.

— 2 Chr 20:12

Two years of pandemic are behind us, but feelings of uncertainty are not. Patterns of church attendance and ministry are in flux. A new world of work is taking shape. And the lingering effects of isolation, especially for older adults, are not fully known. The Board of Pensions, as it has throughout the pandemic, extends God's love through support of our members.

The benefits, the assistance, the education — everything the Board offers is designed to foster well-being in all its dimensions. We urge congregations and employers to reach out to us, especially now, so we can assist them in making their ministers and employees aware of our support.

Our retirees no longer have an employment relationship tied to the Benefits Plan. Yet, their need for support may be greater than ever. Being at a higher risk for COVID-19 has meant isolation from family, and even the loss of the briefest, everyday exchanges made in passing. The Board believed it was necessary to expand the support we provide those who so faithfully served the Church.

Beginning this year, our retirees in the Medicare Supplement Plan have access to the Employee Assistance Plan (EAP). The EAP, provided through Cigna Behavioral Health, has long been a resource for active members in the Medical Plan and is also part of the Minister's Choice benefits package. Anyone in a member's or retiree's household, including live-in caregivers, can use the EAP.

The EAP provides valuable emotional support. There is access to unlimited phone consultations with licensed clinicians and up to six free private counseling sessions per issue. Anyone in the household can also speak with financial consultants about budgeting, debt, and identity theft; consult with a network attorney at no cost; and receive a discount on tax preparation.

Our expanded support for retirees goes even further. Along with the EAP, Medicare Supplement now includes vision coverage. The newly expanded Retiree Medical Grants support dental and hearing needs. And more retirees who answered God's call are able to qualify for Housing and Income supplements.

Our mission is to support active and retired plan members and their families. To uphold this mission, we must always be addressing the needs and concerns of those we serve. With God's help, we will continue to do so.

Grace and peace,

The Reverend Frank Clark Spencer

President
